Watching... So I went to see Inside Out, another masterpiece from Pixar (the best thing about Pixar is that the word "Masterpiece" is seldom dismissed as hyperbole). Here we have a film that explores, via the medium of children's animated entertainment, the complex internal structure of the human mind. It deconstructs the sense of self using bright primary colours and cute little representations of each major facet of what drives us to be who we are. I must confess that my grasp of psychology is limited, but I do know that the film condenses Jungian concepts of individuality and places them alongside a giant pink elephant/cat/dolphin hybrid that cries tears of candy and is voiced by Spin City's Richard Kind, one of the cuddliest actors on the planet. Pixar have never pandered to the storytelling requirements of successful children's fodder, their films always feel personal in a very profound way. The sports movie formula is a recipe like any other, get the right ingredients and task a competent cook to mix it all together and the result is always enjoyable, often exceptional. Every so often, the ingredients are so right and the cook so skilled that the finished product is something truly enduring, but enough culinary metaphors, I'm talking about fight films. Rocky wasn't really about boxing, it was about an individuals struggle to be more than he was, a triumph over adversity fable about the underdog giving all he could get. This year's The Fighter saw Mark Wahlberg try to balance family and romance with a failing boxing career presided over by his junkie brother, played by an emaciated Christian Bale. Remember New Mombasa

Reach has fallen, Bungie has left the franchise (?) and Halo has had it's romantic send off ('cept for online of course), I believe it's high time to look back on the bravest and most underrated entry in the franchise; ODST. No one wanted ODST, it's as simple as that. Die hard Halo fans, still fragging away on Halo 3's multiplayer, were hungry for another story continuation, perhaps a return from Master Chief himself. What they didn't want was a touchy feely prequel starring the distinctly un-augmented members of the Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. It's not that the premise of ODST was a bad idea, it just seemed for many a creative and narrative step back for the Bungie team, fortunately, this couldnt be further from the truth.
